Clearances and Work Space

  • Maintain adequate work space around boxes for safe operation and maintenance. For pad-mounted equipment, allow 8 feet in front of doors, 5 feet on non-operable sides with control cabinets, and 3 feet on non-operable sides without doors .
  • Underground boxes must be level and free of obstructions, with clearances sufficient to remove covers and operate tools safely .

Grounding and Electrical Connections

  • Conductors should enter and exit the bottom of the meter or distribution enclosure, with looped entrance conductors and antioxidant compound applied to lugs .
  • Grounding electrode conductors must not terminate inside the meter enclosure, and splices are not permitted within the enclosure .

Separation from Other Utilities

  • Maintain minimum separation distances: gas lines 12 inches, water/sewer/branch circuits 8 inches, and CATV/communication cables may share the trench without separation .
  • Avoid routing water from manholes into buildings or creating traps where water may accumulate .

  • Follow the National Electrical Code (NEC) and any local amendments, such as the New York City Electrical Code, which may impose additional requirements for safety, permits, and installation practices .
