Ensure no copper module is installed in a combo interface if you want to use fiber, as combo interfaces cannot operate both simultaneously . Check the transceiver type, connector (LC, SC, ST), and supported speed to avoid compatibility issues .
Step 2: Connect the Optical Cable
Insert the optical cable into the SFP module carefully. Clean the fiber connectors with a fiber optic cleaning kit or isopropyl alcohol to prevent signal loss . Ensure the cable is fully seated and the correct type of fiber (single-mode or multi-mode) is used according to the switch specifications .
Step 3: Enable the Port via CLI
- Connect to the switch using SSH, Telnet, or a console connection .
- Enter privileged mode:
enableand provide the password if prompted. - Enter configuration mode:
configure terminal. - Select the interface:
interface <port-id>(e.g.,interface Gi1/0/4). - Enable the port:
no shutdown. - Save the configuration:
copy running-config startup-configto make changes permanent .
Step 4: Configure Combo Interface (if applicable)
For switches with combo interfaces, configure the working mode based on the remote interface type. If the remote side is optical, set the local combo interface to fiber mode. If the remote side is copper, set it to copper mode. Mismatched modes prevent communication .
Step 5: Verify Port and Transceiver Status
After enabling the port, check the link and transceiver status:
