Article Overview
Cable tray edge sealing protects cables from sharp edges, environmental exposure, and fire hazards using grommets, edge strips, fireproof pillows, or weatherstop systems.
Mechanical Edge Protection
Edge protection strips and grommets are commonly used to prevent cable damage from sharp metal edges. Edge protection strips, often with a steel core and UV-resistant coating, cover cut metal edges along cable trays, providing a durable barrier against abrasion and mechanical stress (OBO) . Flexible PVC grommets, such as EdgeGuard, fit edges of 0.8 to 6 mm thickness and are available in circular or oval shapes for flat or ribbon cables. They relieve strain, prevent kinking, and offer a neat finish for cable routing (HellermannTyton) . Snap Track edge protectors are another option, providing flexible PVC trim for continuous cable runs without additional conduit connections (TechLine Mfg) .
Fireproof Sealing
For fire safety, intumescent fireproof pillows like AF BAGS are used to seal cable tray penetrations in walls or floors. These pillows expand under heat to block fire and smoke, certified up to EI 240 (EN 1366-3). They are suitable for cables up to 21 mm in diameter and can be inserted into thin structures without additional framing. AF BAGS are repositionable, non-toxic, and facilitate maintenance or modifications (AF Systems) .
Weatherproof Sealing
Weatherstop systems provide protection against water, chemicals, and corrosion for cable tray penetrations in walls or floors. WSP units use a steel frame with water-resistant pads and silicone-based sealant to create a weathertight seal. They accommodate any cable size, are NEMA classified up to 4X, and are suitable for hazardous, exterior, and wet environments (Dorn CSD) .
Summary
Choosing the right edge sealing method depends on the application:
- Mechanical protection: Edge strips, grommets, or Snap Track edge protectors.
- Fire safety: Intumescent pillows like AF BAGS.
- Weatherproofing: WSP weatherstop systems. Proper edge sealing ensures cable longevity, safety, and compliance with mechanical, fire, and environmental standards.
