  4. Fuse the Fibers: Initiate the fusion process. The splicer uses an electric arc to melt and join the fiber ends, creating a continuous optical path with minimal reflection and attenuation .
  5. Inspect the Splice: Check the splice under the splicer's microscope or using an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) to ensure low insertion loss (typically below 0.05 dB for single-mode fibers) and proper alignment .

Post-Splice Protection

  1. Apply a Splice Sleeve: Slide a protective sleeve over the splice and shrink it using the splicer's heater to provide mechanical strength and environmental protection .
  2. Test the Splice: Measure insertion loss and back reflection to confirm the splice meets system requirements .
