Article Overview

A fiber optic sensor consists of an optical fiber, light source, detector, and optionally a transducer or grating, arranged to convert physical changes into modulated light signals.

Components of a Fiber Optic Sensor

1. Optical Fiber: The core sensing element in intrinsic sensors or a signal transmission medium in extrinsic sensors. It guides light from the source to the sensing region and back to the detector, maintaining signal integrity over long distances . 2. Light Source: Typically a laser diode or LED that injects light into the fiber. The wavelength and intensity of the light are chosen based on the sensor type and application . 3. Detector: Converts the modulated light signal into an electrical signal for analysis. Photodiodes or photodetectors are commonly used . 4. Sensing Element / Transducer:

  • Intrinsic Sensors: The fiber itself is affected by the measurand (strain, temperature, pressure), causing changes in light intensity, phase, polarization, or wavelength .
  • Extrinsic Sensors: The fiber transmits light to and from an external transducer that interacts with the physical quantity .
  • Hybrid Sensors: Combine intrinsic and extrinsic features, with the fiber both sensing and transmitting light . 5. Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG): A periodic variation in the refractive index within the fiber core that reflects specific wavelengths. Changes in strain or temperature shift the reflected wavelength, enabling precise measurements .

[Light Source] ---> [Optical Fiber] ---> [Sensing Region / FBG / Transducer] ---> [Optical Fiber] ---> ---> [Signal Processing Unit]

  • Light Source: Injects light into the fiber.
  • Optical Fiber: Guides light to the sensing region.
  • Sensing Region / FBG / Transducer: Modulates light based on the physical parameter.
  • Detector: Converts modulated light to electrical signals.
  • Signal Processing Unit: Interprets the signal to quantify the measurand.

Working Principle

  • In intrinsic sensors, environmental changes directly alter the light properties within the fiber.
  • In extrinsic sensors, the fiber carries light to an external sensing element, and the modulation occurs outside the fiber.
  • Hybrid sensors utilize both mechanisms for enhanced sensitivity and flexibility . This composition allows fiber optic sensors to measure strain, temperature, pressure, vibration, and other physical quantities with high sensitivity, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and suitability for remote or hazardous environments .
