Article Overview

For low-temperature applications, Agiltron NanoSpeed™ switches (-50°C to +90°C) and FFSY Series fiber optic switches offer robust, temperature-insensitive performance.

Agiltron NanoSpeed™ Fiber Optic Switches

The NanoSpeed™ family is highly suitable for low-temperature environments, with an operating range from -50°C to +90°C. These switches feature ultra-low loss (<1dB), polarization independence, and bi-directional operation across wavelengths from 500nm to 2000nm. They are available in configurations such as 1×1, 1×2, 1×4, and 2×2, and can be either polarization-maintaining or polarization-independent. The switches are highly reliable, with no moving parts or organic materials in the light path, and have passed Telcordia and space qualifications, making them ideal for aerospace or industrial applications. They also support high optical power handling up to 10W and are vibration-insensitive .

FFSY Series Fiber Optic Switches

The FFSY Series provides a micro-mechanical, auto-alignment platform with temperature-insensitive operation. These switches are designed for ultra-broadband, low-loss optical performance and can accommodate all fiber types, including single-mode, multi-mode, polarization-maintaining, and specialty fibers. The optical path is filled with index-matching liquid, eliminating air gaps and minimizing temperature-induced optical distortions. The switches are controlled via RS232, USB, GPIB, or LabVIEW, and are robust against both temperature fluctuations and vibration, making them suitable for harsh environments .

Key Considerations for Low-Temperature Applications

  • Operating Temperature Range: Ensure the switch is rated for the minimum expected temperature (e.g., -50°C for NanoSpeed™).
  • Optical Loss Stability: Low insertion loss should be maintained across the temperature range.
  • Mechanical Robustness: Micro-mechanical or electro-optic designs are preferred for extreme temperatures.
  • Fiber Compatibility: Confirm the switch supports the fiber type used in your system (SM, MM, PM, or specialty fibers).
  • Control Interface: Consider compatibility with your system's control protocols (RS232, USB, GPIB, LabVIEW). Both Agiltron NanoSpeed™ and FFSY Series switches are excellent choices for applications requiring reliable low-temperature performance, high optical quality, and robust mechanical design .
