- Install fuses or DC circuit breakers for each string to protect against overcurrent. Verify that fuse ratings match the short-circuit current of the modules .
- Ensure polarity is correct; reversing polarity can damage the inverter or cause a short circuit .
Step 3: Connect Main Output to Inverter
- After all strings are connected, combine the positive and negative wires into the main output terminals of the combiner box.
- Use DC cables rated for the system voltage and ensure the DC disconnect switch can safely interrupt the full array current in emergencies .
- Verify that the main output polarity matches the inverter's DC input.
Step 4: Grounding and Surge Protection
- Connect the grounding busbar of the combiner box and SPDs to the overall system grounding network. This ensures rapid dissipation of lightning or surge currents .
- SPDs should be wired with the shortest possible connection to ground to maximize protection effectiveness.
Step 5: Connect to the Utility Grid
- For a load-side connection, install a dual-pole solar breaker in the main electrical panel after the main breaker. The breaker size must comply with the 120% rule, meaning the solar breaker cannot exceed 20% of the main panel rating .
- Alternatively, a line-side connection can be used before the main breaker for larger systems or whole-home backup setups.
- Ensure a PV service disconnect is installed between the combiner box and the main panel for safety during maintenance .
Step 6: Verification and Safety Checks
- Confirm all fuses, breakers, and SPDs are correctly installed and functional.
- Check all wiring for correct polarity, secure connections, and proper strain relief.
- Test the system under controlled conditions before full operation to ensure safe and reliable performance . Following these steps ensures that the PV grid-connected distribution box is safely and efficiently integrated into the solar power system, providing protection, monitoring, and reliable energy transfer to the inverter and utility grid.
