Article Overview

Fiber optic sensing based on reflection uses changes in reflected light within an optical fiber to detect physical or chemical changes, with Fiber Bragg Gratings being a key technology.

Principles of Reflection in Fiber Optic Sensing

Fiber optic sensors detect changes in light properties such as intensity, wavelength, or phase when light is reflected from a target or within the fiber itself . Reflection occurs when light encounters a boundary between materials with different refractive indices, causing part of the light to bounce back while the rest continues through the medium . This principle underlies both specular reflection, where light reflects at equal angles on smooth surfaces, and retro-reflection, where light is returned in the opposite direction using angled surfaces .

Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs)

A Fiber Bragg Grating is a segment of optical fiber with a periodic variation in the refractive index of the core, acting as a wavelength-specific reflector . When broadband light passes through an FBG, only the Bragg wavelength is reflected, while other wavelengths are transmitted. The Bragg wavelength depends on the effective refractive index of the fiber core and the grating period. Changes in strain, temperature, or pressure alter the grating period or refractive index, shifting the reflected wavelength, which can be precisely measured to monitor these parameters .

Applications of Reflection-Based Fiber Optic Sensing

Reflection-based fiber optic sensors are widely used in:

  • Structural health monitoring: Measuring strain and stress in bridges, buildings, and aircraft using FBGs .
  • Temperature sensing: Detecting temperature changes through shifts in reflected wavelengths in FBGs .
  • Industrial automation: Detecting object presence, position, or distance using reflective fiber optic sensors, including thrubeam, reflective, and retro-reflective configurations .
  • Chemical sensing: Using fiber-ring cavities and evanescent-wave spectroscopy to detect chemical concentrations based on reflected light intensity .

Advantages

Reflection-based fiber optic sensors offer high sensitivity, immunity to electromagnetic interference, small size, and the ability to operate in harsh or confined environments . They can provide real-time monitoring and are suitable for distributed sensing along long fiber lengths. In summary, fiber optic sensing using reflection leverages the interaction of light with refractive index changes or gratings within the fiber to detect physical, chemical, or positional changes, making it a versatile and precise sensing technology.
